The Christmas Swap by Talia Samuels

Thank you Netgalley and Penguin books for an arc to review.

On the surface, this book was everything you'd expect from a Christmas story of this trope. Fake dating, but one falls for the others sibling. Then all got their happily ever after.

And while I enjoyed reading this, the problem I had was, it wasn't really anything more indepth than I summarised. Ellie, Margot and Ben as the main characters were all okay.

But then we had supporting characters, who really didn't do an awful lot to flesh out beyond the immediate story as required. It meant it was all rather predictable. Yes, it is a holiday romance, so there is a certain amount of predictability with these stories. Yet, at times it felt just a touch too lightweight in how the story evolved - or rather didn't. We had glimpses, but it felt frustratingly light on detail.

There were moments of humour, and some tension from 3rd parties. Nothing unexpected, as I say.

This is a book that isn't bad per se. I was happy enough to read it. But I have certainly read better wlw Christmas stories, including a fake dating Christmas story from last year (I won't mention the name, but needless to say, girl dates boy, but falls for sister) that I enjoyed considerably more and is lined up ready to read again this year.

This is a book that I would read around Christmas time and enjoy. But I'm not sure I would then revisit it.

An okay overall wlw Christmas story so a solid 3/5 stars 🌟 🌟🌟 but not quite enough to lift it beyond that.
