"Uninvited House Ghosts" by Rachel Ford

Thank you StoryOrigin and Rachel Ford for the ARC to review.

This book has a supernatural element. I find that they generally fall into two camps. Either too tangled or just too little depth to at least make me feel engaged to read, or, as happened here, immediately hooked and want to know more.

We begin with Tennessee Evans, who finds her ex murdered in her backyard, and of course, she is immediately the prime suspect.

From there, we cut to the introduction of the supernatural element. In this instance, the ancestral council, who manage the affairs of Evans' descendants. We are also introduced to Cristobal, the family guardian angel, who reports on the misfortune that Tennessee finds herself in.

I was immediately taken with all the characters.

Raymond Clarence Evans, & Jack Evans are chosen via votes by the ancestors to be sent to try and help Tennessee. Needless to say, there couldn't have been two more opposite in character, yet as time goes on, they begin to work well together. I enjoyed the dynamic between these two, as much as I loved the dynamic of Tennessee Evans with Shania Wagner. Shania being one of the detectives investigating the murder, and therefore, investigating Tennessee herself despite the attraction between them.

This book is very character driven, as we also get glimpses of people around Tennessee with quirky neighbours who just fit in nicely. Nothing feels superfluous or convoluted, as some heavily character driven stories can be.

The supernatural element is balanced and in the context of the story was absolutely spot on.

We also get a nice mystery, as this is ultimately a whodunit. It wasn't earth shattering (I'd guessed quite quickly) yet it was still fun seeing it unfold as I read.

The humour was just right, and had me chuckling on occasion.

This is the kind of book, that if you want to read something that isn't too taxing, yet a bit more than the norm, with a sapphic vibe, I'd suggest this.

That last line though..... I'm so intrigued about what is coming next!

Happily giving this 5/5 stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟
